Nainital is one of the spectacular Himalayan hill stations, located in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand state of India. It is popularly known as “Lake District of India” and the name was derived by joining two words ‘Naini’ means ‘Eyes’ and ‘Tal’ means ‘Lake’. According to a Hindu mythology, it is believed that the eye of ‘Sati Mata’, Lord Shiva’s wife fell on the earth while he was carrying her scorched body to Kailasa. The shape of Naini Lake is similar to an eye and it is believed that it is the eye of ‘Sati Mata’. Naini Lake is one of the most famous tourist spots of Nainital. The lake of Nainital is divided into two sections: the northern section is known as ‘Mallital’ and the southern section is known as ‘Sallital’. Other famous lakes in and around Nainital are Sariatal, Saattal (seven lakes), Naukuchiatal (nine cornered lakes), Khurpatal and last but not the least the popular Bhimtal, which harbors a small and serene island in the middle accessible to the tourists by boats. The picturesque Nainital Lake is surrounded by 7 Peaks- Ayarpata, Cheena peak, Alma, Laria Kanta, Deopata, Handi Bandi and Sher – Ka- danda. There are numerous places for sightseeing in Nainital.
